The simplicity of these cups distils the themes of Louise Bourgeois’ very long artistic journey. She was born in France in 1911 and moved to the USA in 1938.
Pink and blue refer to childhood and its unresolved dramas, but also to the eternal dialectic between the sexes. The colors of painting, the volumes of sculpture, the words of an artist who also loved writing:
“Color is stronger than words.
It communicates subliminally.
Light blue represents peace,
meditation, escape.
Pink is feminine. It represents
pleasure and self-acceptance.”
The single cup Je t’aime, je t’aime, je t’aime, with its circular, essential declaration of love, is the ideal completion for the Le jour la nuit le jour series.
It was presented on the occasion of the Louise Bourgeois exhibition celebrating the tenth anniversary of the illy collections at the Palais de Tokyo in Paris.
