To mark the 53rd International Art Exhibition (Venice Biennale), illycaffè will be presenting the new individual illy Art Collection espresso cup designed by Tobias Rehberger, an artist chosen by Daniel Birnbaum, the director of the 53rd exhibition, to design the bar and restaurant inside the new exhibition building in the Biennale gardens.
Rehberger treats the white surface of the espresso cup designed by Matteo Thun as a blank canvas, decorating it with optical effects and patterns.
The cup and matching saucer create a fascinating visual impact that stimulates the observer to make sense of the patterns. The idea is beautifully absorbed into the interior of the bar and restaurant in the new exhibition building, where the cup is almost camouflaged, a hidden element of an unusual and captivating game, yet part of a unique, complete overall design.
Tobias Rehberger (Esslingen, 1966) is one of Germany’s most successful contemporary artists. He established his reputation during the 1990s, reinterpreting interiors and exteriors by using design, lighting and architecture to create new forms and new ways of engaging the public. Rehberger has exhibited at the Biennale exhibitions of Venice and Berlin, Manifesta in Luxembourg, the Chicago Museum of Contemporary Art and the Palais of Tokyo in Paris.
